Getzen Tenor Trombone Competition

​Eligibility
  • Under 26 years of age on June 23, 2026
  • Must be in the STS Participant Class

​Rules/Procedure
  • The 2026 competitions will separate tenor and bass competitors into their own categories.  The tenors will compete with EXCERPTS only, and basses with solos only.  
  • Preliminary round submissions are to be submitted with your competition registration and must include audio and video.
  • All competitors must submit a STS Participant application separate from the competition submission(s).​​
  • Semifinal and final rounds will happen live at the 2026 STS.  Recordings must be unedited, but audio gain changes on entire recordings are permitted.
  • Performers can skip over multi-measure rests at their discretion.
  • All recordings must be submitted via a YouTube link.  The YouTube video must be “Unlisted” and comments should be disabled. 
  • The link to your recording will be submitted along with the registration form and payment. See below for dates: 
  • Competitors must pay a STS Competition Entry fee through the registration form.
  • All entrants will receive feedback from the judges.

Repertoire
Preliminary Round (due with application):
  • H. Berlioz (tbn 2) - The Damnation of Faust: six mm. before Reh. 4 to two mm. after Reh. 5.
  • W. A. Mozart (tbn 2) - Tuba Mirum:  beginning to mm. 18.
  • C. Saint-Saëns (tbn 1) - Symphony No. 3: Reh. Q to R, AND twelve mm. after Reh. R to two mm. after Reh. S.
  • R. Wagner (tbn 1) - Ride of the Valkyries: pickup to Reh. 3 to two mm. before Reh. 4, AND pickup to Reh. 5 to three mm. after Reh. 6.
  • R. Strauss (tbn 2) - Eine Alpensinfonie: Reh. 21 to 22.
  • G. Rossini (1 tbn version) - La Gazza Ladra: Reh. 3 to 4; Reh. 7 to 8; AND Reh. 9 to the downbeat of thirty mm. after Reh. 9.
  • G. Mahler (tbn 2) - Symphony No. 5: Mvmt 1 - nine mm. after Reh. 11 to five mm. before Reh. 13, AND Mvmt 2 - nine mm. before Reh 25 to Reh. 25. 

Semi-Final & Final Round (preliminary round excerpts will be included in this round):

Important Dates​
  • Final recording submission deadline to be considered for the competitions is March 15th.
  • The STS will begin notifying participants who advance to the semi-final rounds beginning April 1st.
