STS Youth Camp

The STS Youth Camp will provide pre-college students an opportunity to experience the Southeast Trombone Symposium in a way that preserves a Youth Camp experience. Campers will attend all STS masterclasses, concerts, and clinics, and will also have experiences designed specifically for their age and ability including:
- Audition preparation and coaching
- Guided discussions with STS Faculty on career opportunities in music
- Opportunities to rehearse and perform in a trombone chamber ensemble and trombone choir
- Opportunities to schedule private lessons with STS faculty
- Games and other activities
- S.E. Shires Youth Competition
The STS Youth Camp is headed by Nicole Abissi, a New York City professional trombonist and teacher of all ages. She is a member of the nationally touring Stiletto Brass Quintet and performs on Broadway and with professional orchestras around the world. STS Youth Campers will be supervised by Student Counselors, and parents can drop their children off with confidence. Life in the University Apartments is safe and structured, with counselors and resident assistants on hand. Campers will be walked to and from the housing, the Schwob School of Music, and the Rankin Den where meals are served. In addition, free shuttle service for STS Youth Campers will be available from the Columbus Airport (CSG) or from the Groome Transportation headquarters in Columbus.
The STS Youth Camp schedule will be posted when it is complete, but for the purposes of travel planning, Campers will need to arrive at the Schwob School of Music for check-in between 10:00am and 4:00pm on June 23, and will be checked out after the final concert around 3:00pm on June 28th. Campers will perform as a group on the final concert at 2pm on June 28, along with the other STS student ensembles. Friends and family are encouraged to attend! Housing for the night of June 28 will be available for an additional fee if travel arrangements make a June 29 departure easier.
STS Youth Camp and Schwob Summer Music Festival option
This year offers us a unique opportunity with the STS and the Schwob Summer Music Festival running back to back. We are offering the option for students to attend the STS Youth Camp for 5 days and stay with us through the Schwob Summer Music Festival at a deeply-discounted rate. There will be a seamless transition between the STS Youth Camp and SSMF, and while the experiences will be very different, one will complement the other extremely well. Students attending the SSMF will have the opportunity to work closely with Dr. Palmer and the other Schwob School of Music faculty. The SSMF runs from June 28th through July 3rd.
S.E. Shires Youth Competition
Campers will be eligible to enter the S.E. Shires Youth Competition. The winner of the competition will receive a S.E. Shires Q-Series trombone.
